Manure, milk disposal guidance for dairy farms
Monday, March 30, 2020
DBA is working closely with our dairy community partners and government agencies to help our members manage the effects of the COVID-19 public health emergency.
We communicate frequently with our processor members and the Wisconsin Cheese Makers Association regarding the balancing of the state’s milk supply.
If you have been asked to dispose of milk by your processor, please keep in mind the guidance that was issued by DNR and DATCP regarding this. CAFO farms should reach out to their field staff or Chris Clayton at DNR to make them aware of the situation and with any compliance questions. Mr. Clayton can be reached at (608) 333-9265 or via email at Christopherr.Clayton@Wisconsin.gov. Non-CAFO farms have much more flexibility when it comes to disposal thanks to an executive order by Gov. Tony Evers that exempts many of them from NR 151 requirements, at least for the emergency land application of milk. Still, non-CAFO farms should contact Lacey Cochart at DATCP to confirm they are complying with all necessary regulations. Ms. Cochart can be reached at (608) 224-4603 or via email at Lacey.Cochart@Wisconsin.gov.
Farmers who purchased Dairy-RP coverage should also contact their insurer to be certain that any disposed milk can still be counted toward total production for purposes of filing and receiving a claim under their policy. This will likely require that provisions are made to weigh and test the milk, even if it will ultimately require disposal.
Please know that we will continue to work with you, processors, other industry partners and lawmakers to identify ways to help our dairy community manage through these unprecedented times.
And, remember that you can find more resources on our special COVID-19 webpage — including this guide for farmers, which covers topics such as workplace safety, farm visitors and employee screening.
