An association is defined as a connection between people or organizations. A connection is some common factor linking all members together. For DBA, this is dairy. And, more importantly, making sure that dairy farmers and other businesses in Wisconsin can thrive.
As a member of DBA or any other organization, you pay dues to get something. In some cases, the value and benefits are very clear, while for other organizations it is not always black and white.
Membership dues paid to the DBA support our work on your behalf. Some of this work is “big picture” — it’s focused on identifying key pieces of legislation that our elected officials are looking to change and determining how they might positively or negatively affect our members. It is up to us to establish a strong working relationship early on in these processes so that your voices are heard and we are able to ensure that the decision-makers consider the impact the changes will have on our dairies.
Big-picture work is hard for some to see, but be assured we are there representing you. Beyond that work we do, there are a lot of other services we provide to our members. Our team often hears from new members, “We should have been working with you much sooner.” They’re right! The earlier we are involved, the more impact we can have.
So, the next time a renewal comes in the mail, please know just what we are doing for you. Our team is a phone call or email away when you hear that one of your local townships or county boards is considering a moratorium on manure spreading. We are there for you when you have an unintended manure spill and need to know how to communicate with the DNR and local media. We are here to provide you with opportunities to learn more about the process of permitting your farms or ideas to improve on-farm safety.
As we encourage you to reach out to our team more, we would also like to gather feedback. Don’t be afraid to tell us when you need something different in how we communicate or would like to see us focus on a new issue. Most likely if something is a challenge for you and your dairy it is impacting someone else, too. Finally, please keep an eye out in 2019 for an annual survey to gather feedback for how we as an association can serve you better.
Thanks for all you do for Wisconsin’s dairy community and please don’t hesitate to contact anyone on our team. We are here for you!
